Southern hospitality, Berry style

Berry's alumni community extends far beyond campus, and recently that spirit of connection was on full display in Huntsville, Alabama.

Cathy O'Connell Stender (77C) and her husband, Bill, opened the gates of their historic Poplar Grove estate to welcome Berry College President Dr. Sandeep Mazumder for an evening of fellowship, discovery and celebration. Joined by cohosts Margie O'Connell Tumlin (76C), Wesley Crunkleton (01C) and his wife, Meggan, the gathering brought together local alumni and friends of the college for a memorable introduction to Berry's newest leader.

Throughout the evening, guests explored thoughtfully curated displays highlighting Berry's rich history, vibrant present and promising future. Along the way, they enjoyed chef-inspired dishes featuring products from Berry's student-run enterprises, including campus-raised beef and locally produced honey, as well as a garden-inspired punch based on a recipe discovered in Martha Berry's purse.

The event also celebrated the lasting connection between Berry College and Henry and Clara Ford, a fitting tribute given Cathy's leadership in the automotive industry. Owner of Woody Anderson Ford in Huntsville, Cathy was the first woman inducted into the Ford Motor Company Dealers Hall of Fame.
